FACT CHECK

DigitEYE India decided to investigate this claim and found it to be false. The footage shows pro-EU demonstrations in Tbilisi, Georgia, in 2024 rather than recent protests in France. The unrest began after the Georgian government announced a pause in EU membership talks until 2028, prompting widespread public opposition.

Details:

We first conducted a reverse image search on various keyframes of the video to learn about the original context. The search results took us to a report along with video published by AP news on 1 December, 2024, titled : “Protesters use fireworks against riot police in Tbilisi”. The report states that “Protestors used fireworks against riot police in Tbilisi late on Saturday as they gathered across Georgia for a third straight night of demonstrations against the government’s decision to suspend negotiations to join the European Union.”

Another search result took us to a Youtube video uploaded by ‘Bloomberg Television’ on 4 December, 2024. The video is titled : “Protesters Launch Fireworks at Police in Georgia.” From the description we learnt that it showcases “protests in Tbilisi, Georgia…protesters and riot police exchange fireworks and tear gas following the government’s decision last week to suspend EU membership talks.”

Following this, we conducted a web search with the phrase “protestors clash with police in Georgia December 2024” to learn more. According to a report by The Telegraph published on December 1 2024, protests erupted in Tbilisi, Georgia after the government announced it would suspend European Union accession talks until 2028. Thousands of demonstrators took to the streets to oppose the decision amid a wider political crisis following the disputed October parliamentary election.

Another report by Reuters published on December 6 2024 states that protests continued in Tbilisi, Georgia, after the government announced it was freezing European Union accession talks until 2028. Demonstrators defended their use of fireworks as a form of self-defence, with one student stating that they were “the only thing for us to defend from the police” amid alleged police violence.

Thus, the claimed video originates from pro-European Union protests in Tbilisi, Georgia, in 2024, not recent protests in France.

Hence, the claim is false.
