Old video of scuffle at a BJP rally in Odisha passed off as Tamil Nadu’s incident recently; Fact Check

A video of BJP leaders being thrashed by the public while campaigning is going viral with a claim that the incident took place between two groups in Tamil Nadu Bharatiya Janata Party recently. The claim in Hindi, translated into English reads: “In Tamil Nadu, the people have wiped out the BJP leaders by pulling them down from their luxurious chariots, the people are teaching them a lesson, good days are coming.”

[Translation: “In Tamil Nadu, the people have wiped out the BJP leaders by pulling them down from their luxurious chariots, the people are teaching them a lesson, good days are coming”]

FACT CHECK

Since the language text shown in the video differed from Tamil, Digiteye India fact-checked and found that the original video is from October 2023 when a scuffle between BJP leaders took place in Balangir, Odisha.

To begin with, we took keyframes and checked them on Google Reverse Image Search and the results showed the original video uploaded by Kalinga TV on October 9, 2023. Authenticating the video, several news reports were also published on the incident that happened near the RTO Chowk in Balangir.

According to the report, BJP Odisha’s state president Manmohan Samal and MP Sangeeta Singh Deo were holding a rally in the area when two other members Anant Das and Balram Singh Yadav tried to offer them a bouquet. They were reportedly stopped from doing this by BJP leader Gopalji Panigrahi, following which a scuffle started between them.

News reports published by Odisha Bytes and The New Indian Express corroborate the incident during the ‘Mo Mati Mo Desha’ programme organised by the BJP. Gopalji Panigrahi had later filed an FIR at a local police station.

Hence, a wrong video has been uploaded as a BJP party clash in Tamil Nadu.

Claim: Video from Tamil Nadu BJP rally shows clashes among the party members in a rally.
Conclusion: The claim is false. The video is from Balangir, Odisha from October 2023 when a local BJP rally witnessed clashes among the party members.
Rating: Misleading —
