Video claims Priyanka Gandhi protesting on streets against Waqf Bill; Fact Check

A video featuring Congress leader and Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra sitting on the road amid a crowd of police personnel has gone viral on social media.

The translated version reads:  “Congress is giving belt treatment to BJP government on Waqf Bill. Jairam Ramesh has said that we will go to the Supreme Court against the Waqf Bill. The Waqf Bill has been introduced to loot lands, against which the Congress will protest from the streets to Parliament. “

Many users are sharing the clip claiming it shows her protesting the Waqf Act, which has become contentious and has been vehemently criticized by opposition parties including the Congress as unconstitutional and an attack on religious freedom. Now removed from FaceBook, the archived video can be accessed here:

Another post shared the video with similar caption that reads: “All India National Congress General Secretary MP Priyanka Gandhi sits on the streets to protest against the Waqf Bill.”

The Waqf Act, which governs properties endowed for religious or charitable purposes in the Muslim community, has evoked political controversy with opposition leaders Rahul Gandhi and other criticizing it for allegedly infringing on property rights and religious freedoms, stating that it undermines the secular and constitutional fabric of India.

FACT CHECK

As the video was sent on Digiteye India WhatsApp tipline, we took it up for scrutiny and found that claim used along with the video is misleading.

Using the InVid tool for key frames of the video and checking them on Google Reverse Image Search revealed that the video is not related to the Waqf Act protests as claimed but an old protest led by Priyanka Gandhi on August 5, 2022.

The protest held by Congress was against the issues of inflation, unemployment, and the alleged misuse of central agencies by the ruling government and it was widely reported in news media outlets here and here:

In fact, other leaders of Congress, including Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, among others were seen wearing black clothes, symbolizing dissent against rising prices and unemployment.

News reports also reveal that Delhi Police detained over 200 Congress leaders, including Priyanka Gandhi, who was seen being forcibly taken away in a police vehicle. Protesters were also stopped from marching toward Rashtrapati Bhawan.

Hence, the claim is false.

Claim: A viral video shows Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra protesting against the recently enacted Waqf Act.

Conclusion: Misrepresentation. An old video of Priyanka Gandhi sitting in protest in August 2022 was shared as the one against the current Waqf Act.

Rating: Misrepresentation —
