A viral Youtube short posted on July 5, 2025, shared across numerous social media platforms and channels has alleged that Anil Ambani was granted extraordinary financial relief by the Modi government.
Translated into English it reads:
Translated into English it reads : “This donation-based business runs just like this. Ambani took a loan of ₹49,000 crore, and the Modi government settled it for ₹455 crore. The remaining ₹48,545 crore went from whose pocket? From the pockets of those who clap for Modi all day long.”
This Youtube short has gained over 14,000 likes, accusing that the government actively wrote off a huge corporate debt, allowing Ambani to escape repayment of ₹48,545 crores. In essence, Anil Ambani paid about 0.92% of the original debt.
FACT CHECK
DigitEYE India decided to take this up and discovered that there was no waiver by the Modi Government or any political favouritism by ministers. Instead, the matter was handled through the NCLT, which supervises all IBC-driven corporate insolvencies.
The National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) established under the Companies Act, 2013 handles such insolvency, and company law matters. Under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC), 2016 it oversees debt restructuring and other insolvency issues.
The team wable to learn that on February 1, 2019, Anil Ambani’s Reliance Communications (RCom) announced that it would file for bankruptcy protection at the NCLT’s Mumbai bench. The National Herald among many others confirms this in their article here, stating how the debt exceeded 46,000 crores. Here’s an image of the report below:
The Reliance Communication owed ₹49,668 crore to creditors, as claimed during the insolvency process. From this, the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) accepted claims worth ₹47,251 crore as valid. A report (here) from Tax Guru sheds light and explains this further.

From the debt, only ₹182.20 crore (0.44% of the total debt) was directly lent to the company while the rest was corporate guarantees. The report cited above additionally says, “As per the NCLT’s order dated December 19, 2023, the liquidation value of the CD was ₹428.59
crore, with creditors realizing ₹455.92 crore under the approved resolution plan.”
An article published (Here) by the Business Standard also confirms that it was the NCLT who approved the resolution plan and not the “Modi Government” as the Youtube short claimed.

Thus, the final deal was sanctioned by the NCLT following standard legal procedure under Section 31 of the IBC as mentioned. The claim that “the Modi government settled it for ₹455 crore” is false. While some may question the decision of the NCLT, the claim that this “money went from the pockets of those who clap for Modi all day long” is also not accurate.
