Claim: After opening a WhatsApp “view once” file, typing “.rvo” (as a reply) will automatically re-display the photo.
Conclusion: The claim is totally false. Typing “.rvo” does nothing in the official WhatsApp app. Once a view-once photo or video is opened and closed, it disappears permanently and cannot be viewed again.

Several social media users have shared a video and claimed that typing “.rvo” as a reply will re-display a file. Verified X user ‘Alphx_Elite’ shared such a post with the caption (translated into English) : “It was claimed that it’s possible to view again the messages sent just once with this WhatsApp method. What do you think, is this real?” Attached to the post is a 16 second video that allegedly showcases this trick. View the post below –

FACT CHECK
DigitEYE India decided to investigate this claim and found it to be false. The “.rvo” command has no effect in the official WhatsApp application. After a ‘View Once’ photo or video is opened and exited, it is no longer accessible through the app.
We first tested this feature on our own respective Whatsapp app downloaded from the official playstore/app store. The method does not work and there are no credible reports or evidence to suggest otherwise. As the name suggests, the feature is designed to “view once” and cannot be reopened.
According to WhatsApp, View Once lets users send photos, videos, and voice messages that “disappear from a chat after the recipient has opened them once.” Once a ‘View Once’ file is sent, the sender cannot access it again, and recipients cannot forward, save, copy, star, or share the content. WhatsApp also states that photos and videos sent using this feature are not saved to the recipient’s gallery or photos app.
While screenshots of ‘View Once’ media are blocked, the company notes that there are “other ways” recipients can record or save the content, such as using another device. Additionally, unopened ‘View Once’ messages must be viewed within 14 days or they will automatically expire. View a screenshot of a section below –

Another WhatsApp help article explains the step by step procedure of how users can send and open ‘View Once’ media and voice messages. WhatsApp states that such content “won’t be saved to the recipient’s Photos or Gallery” and cannot be forwarded, shared, or copied. Once the recipient exits the media viewer, the content becomes inaccessible and cannot be opened again. View a section from this help article below –

Back on September 9, 2024, a TechCrunch report revealed that security researcher Tal Be’ery had discovered a flaw in WhatsApp’s view once feature. In a live demonstration, he successfully captured and stored a ‘View Once’ image, arguing that the vulnerability created a “false sense” of privacy. Following the disclosure, Meta acknowledged the issue and said it was “already in the process of rolling out updates” to improve ‘View Once’ protections on the web platform.
However, DigitEYE India found no evidence that any command such as “.rvo” was ever used or produced the claimed results. Therefore, the claim is false and the command does not work in the official WhatsApp application.
