Several social media users have shared visuals of a Pro-Palestinain protest that went violent after Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni refused to recognize Palestine state. Verified X user ‘Partisan_12’ shared such a claim and video with the caption: “Situation in Italy after PM Meloni refused to recognize Palestine.” The post can be viewed below: 

Verified X account ‘TimesAlgebraIND’ also shared the same footage with a part of the caption: “Now, Far-left radicals & migrant gangs unleash riots across Italy. They are blocking ports, damaging properties.” Posted on 23 September, 2025, view the post here:

FACT CHECK

DigitEYE India decided to verify this claim and found that it was true. Several credible news outlets have covered the incident and violence. No evidence suggests the video is misattributed and the claim holds as a fair representation of recent events in Milan, Italy. 

We first conducted a keyword search with the phrase “Meloni’s Stance on Palestine” to learn about her decision. On September 23, 2025, Meloni stated Italy would recognize Palestine only if hostages are freed and Hamas is excluded. According to a report by Euronews, PM Meloni would only recognize Palestine if “ Israeli hostages are freed and Hamas is out of the government” View a snippet from the report below: 

Another report published by Reuters on 24th September 2025 also sheds light on her decision. The report highlights PM Meloni’s comment: “I am not against the recognition of Palestine, but we should set ourselves the right priorities.” This echoed her government’s view that recognizing a non-existing state could be counter-productive.

After conducting a reverse image search of various keyframes from the video, we came across numerous reports which match the claim. For instance, a report by the Times of India on 23 September, 2025 uses the same footage to highlight the unrest in Milan, Italy. According to the report, “the protests escalated when a group of demonstrators stormed the central train station, clashing with riot police.” View a snippet from the article below: 

Other reports like that by the Guardian on 22 September, 2025 have also covered the incident, using similar footage. So, the claim is substantiated by credible reports and the footage shared in the claim is also authentic.
