Does this video really show Tesla’s infotainment system capturing ghosts? Fact Check

Claim : Video claims to show figures that appear to be ghosts on a Tesla infotainment screen in front of an empty cemetery.

Conclusion : The claim is misleading. While the video footage is authentic and captures real Tesla system behavior, the ghost interpretation is wrong. This is a documented technical limitation of Tesla’s camera-based vision AI which identifies some objects as pedestrians.

Rating : Misleading

Several social media users have shared a video and claimed that Tesla’s infotainment screen has captured ghosts. Verified X user ‘AsakyGRN’ shared such a post with the caption : “A man driving his cyber truck through an empty cemetery was shocked after he suddenly saw figures that appeared to be ghosts appearing on his infotainment system screen, yet outside, there wasn’t a soul in sight.” Attached to the post is a 37-second video showing the vehicle’s visualization overlay displaying multiple white pedestrian icons. FACT CHECK

DigitEYE India decided to investigate this claim and found it to be Misleading. Although the footage is genuine and shows how the Tesla system operates, the claim of a “ghost” is incorrect. The incident reflects a known limitation of Tesla’s camera-based vision AI, which can sometimes misclassify objects as pedestrians.

We first conducted a web search with the phrase “Tesla spots ghosts and spirits” to learn more about the claim. According to a Newsweek report, a Tesla driver in Seattle was startled when his car displayed a “suspicious” figure,  though he later realized “there were no people there” and it was likely a “software glitch.” The system, which “monitors the area in front of the car for the presence of vehicles and pedestrians,” may have misread the surroundings and generated the false image. Following this, another report by Gadget review mentions how Tesla’s so-called “phantom pedestrians” are not supernatural but the result of a “machine learning malfunction,” where the system misreads surroundings due to its “vision-only approach.” Environments like cemeteries create a “perfect storm” for errors, as “weathered stones,” shadows, and statues trigger pattern recognition. The report further states this is a form of “machine pareidolia” where the AI sees human shapes that aren’t there. View a screenshot of this section below –

Other reports including one published by The Drum also affirm that Tesla’s cars appear to “see ghosts” because of an “AI malfunction,” where the system tries “to make sense of an ambiguous environment” using incomplete data. The issue arises because “intelligent systems… are only as good as the data that feeds them,” and when signals lack depth, the algorithm ends up seeing “movement without meaning” or even “shadows of activity.”

Tesla has not officially responded to any such videos or claims. However, in the Tesla 3 Owner’s Manual notes that forward collision warning is for guidance only and “several factors can reduce or impair performance, causing either unnecessary, invalid, inaccurate, or missed warnings.” DigitEYE India did not come across any scientific evidence to confirm that Tesla’s infotainment system can record spirits or ghosts.

Thus, the claim is misleading.
