Old images shared as those of Imran Khan being shot recently at Wazirabad rally in Pakistan; Fact Check

After the news of former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan injured in a gun attack on his rally in Wazirabad in Pakistan, several photos started circulating on social media as visuals of the attack and its immediate aftermath. These images have also been shared on Twitter with the caption, “Photos of Imran Khan have surfaced after he was shot. 9 people were injured in the attack, and 1 dead.” See visuals here:

These images have been widely shared by several news outlets in India too here and here.

Fact-check

However, some of the images were old and not from the rally when Imran Khan was shot at. A Google Reverse Image Search showed that the following image of Imran Khan laying on the ground with his arms up was in fact from 2014 shared by him with the caption, ‘Night at the dharna [protest]’ when he was undertaking a protest agaimst the then Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to resign after allegations of ‘electoral match-fixing’.

The image showing a bleeding Imran Khan being carried by his aides was also an old one taken in 2013 when Khan injured his head after falling off a forklift that was taking him onto a stage at an election rally in Lahore. Here’s the video of the incident uploaded by Al Jazeera English’s YouTube channel.

Hence, old images have been shared again as Imran Khan shot in the latest rally.
