Did Kharge not applaud when P.V. Narasimha Rao’s son received Bharat Ratna? Fact Check

After President Droupadi Murmu presented the Bharat Ratna awards on Saturday, including one conferred on former Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao, a post on social media has gone viral showing Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge not applauding when late PM’s son PV Prabhakar Rao received the award. Other dignitaries, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, can be seen applauding.

The claim reads:

“What is Mr.Karge doing when all others are applauding and celebrating. I see his demeanor different no indifferent to the occasion.” Another claim reads, “Every Indian cherishes except one person”

The tweet can be seen here and here.

FACT-CHECK

When Digiteye India ran a quick search on “Narasimha Rao Bharat Ratna” on Twitter, we got the results that showed several tweets showing the same picture. But further search on PIB’s official website showed the President of India’s official Youtube account where the original video of PV Prabhakar Rao receiving the award was uploaded on March 31, 2024.

In this video, Kharge can be seen clearly clapping when the award was announced and the opening of the video has captured it clearly. See the images below (Left, when receiving the award later and right, when the award was announced a minute before):

Hence, the claim that Kharge did not applause when PV Narasimha Rao’s son was receiving the Bharat Ratna is false.

Claim: Kharge did not applaud when PV Prabhakar received the Bharat Ratna on behalf of his late father PV Narasimha Rao.

Conclusion: Kharge did applaud when the name was announced and the viral image was taken later and used out of context.

Rating: Misrepresentation —
