Did ICC announce World Cup final to be ‘best of three’ after India’s loss? Fact Check

The Cricket World Cup final match between India and Australia brought the nation to a standstill. India reached the finals after winning all the matches in the series. However, during the finals, the Australian team played well and won the match by six wickets. Following this win, multiple claims are going viral on social media.

A viral claim alleges that following the loss by the Indian team, the ICC announced that the winner would be decided by a new parameter. It alleges that the winner will be decided by the best of three and this is because of a clause BCCI had added to the tournament’s playing conditions. Along with the claim, a news report is going viral too. The report adds that “two more matches would be scheduled for Mumbai and Kolkata to ensure their conquerors were truly worthy of the prize.”

Apart from Twitter, the news is also going viral on WhatsApp. Digiteye India received a request to fact check this viral claim on its WhatsApp tipline.

FACT CHECK

The Digiteye India team checked the social media account and the official website of the International Cricket Council. Their media release tab had no official information on the same. The last media release was a statement that was released on November 23, 2023. It revealed that Marlon Samuels has been banned for six years under anti-corruption code. There was no statement that talked about this change in the rules.

After visiting the ICC’s website, we also looked at the official accounts of The Board of Control for Cricket in India. Their social media accounts made no mention of this change in the rules. The news section on their website had no such information. The last press release was issued on November 20, 2023 and it was about how the Indian squad for the T20I series against Australia was made official.

Additionally, none of the cricketing personalities or the cricket board members have talked about this change in rules.

Lastly, we decided to take a look at the news report. At the top of the page, it is mentioned that the article is a satire and not an actual piece of news. The Roar is an Australian sports opinion website where experts and fans submit their opinion and videos about anything related to sports. The website was established in late 2006 and they often post satirical writings.

A piece of satiricial news is being shared as a reality on social media websites. The claim is, hence, false.

CLAIM: A news article claims that ICC has changed rules for announcing the winner of the Cricket World Cup 2003 after India’s loss. It alleges that the winner would be selected on the basis of best of three based on a clause mentioned by the BCCI.

CONCLUSION: The claim is entirely false. The news article that is being shared with the claim has clearly mentioned that it is satire. Additionally, BCCI and ICC have made no such announcement about this change in the rule.

RATING: ????? – Totally False.
