Old video from 2019 shared as latest vandalism at Naopara Mahishasur Rly Station; Fact Check

A video showing a group of people vandalizing a railway station is going viral on social media. The claim that is going viral with the video alleges that a religious minority group resorted to violence when they were getting disturbed. The claim reads,

Naopara Mahishashur raillway station in Murshidabad, West Bengal was totally vandalized & practically destroyed saying that sound of train whistle is disturbing their namaz. See the age group of the goons, product of Madrasas? Are you able to see the future of India.”

Digiteye India also received a request to fact check this viral video on WhatsApp.

FACT CHECK

The Digiteye India team broke the video down into multiple keyframes using inVID – a video verification tool. We used these keyframes to run a Reverse Image Search on Google. One of the results led us to a tweet from April 28, 2022, which shared the same video with a similar claim. This confirmed that the video is not the latest but has been in circulation for a long time.

In one of the keyframes of the video, we saw the name of the railway station. It is named Naopara Mahishasur. This station is based on the Barharwa-Azimganj-Katwa loop of the Malda railway division of the Eastern Railway zone. The station itself is situated at Pilki, Naopara of Murshidabad district in West Bengal. To confirm if the railway station in the video is the same, we used this clue and conducted a keyword search on Google. We found this video of Naopara Mahishasur railway station. At the 2:11 mark, you can see the same location as seen in the viral video.

Further keyword searches led us to this video that was uploaded on YouTube on November 18, 2020. Uploaded by Wild Films India, the title of the video reads, “Young men vandalise railway station in West Bengal | CAA/ NRC incidents in India.” From the 0:28 mark onwards, you can see the same footage that has been shared in the viral video.

The description of the video reads, “Residents near a Railway station in West Bengal storm the place with wooden sticks and breaking the government property as an act to attract attention. Young boys are also seen with sticks hitting the walls and fans inside the building. Broken furniture littered around the room as the young people went on a rampage inside the station.”

Now that we figured out that the video is from a CAA protest, we refined our keywords. The search led us to this Facebook post that was uploaded on December 15, 2019. The caption reveals that the video is from a CAA/NRC protest. In the post, multiple videos and images show how Naopara Mahishasur Railway Station was vandalized.

The claim is, hence, false.

CLAIM: A viral video claims that Muslims vandalized the Naopara Murshidabad Railway Station because the train sounds disturbed namaaz.

CONCLUSION: The claim is misleading. The video is from 2019 when people vandalized the railway station during the CAA/NRC protests.

RATING: Misinterpretation —
