Footage of Muslim man molesting school girl is not from India; Fact Check

A video footage of a Muslim man following a school girl and sexually assaulting her just before she entered a house is being shared widely on social media, with a claim that the girl was a Hindu.

The caption in Hindi states: “जब भी देखता हूँ मेरा दिल दुखता है तो इस लड़की के बजाय अपने बच्चे के बारे में सोचना। इनके खिलाफ आवाज उठाओ। दुष्ट शक्तियों को गिरने दो। शेयर करके सबको जागरूक करें। ” The English translation reads:”Whenever I see this, my heart burns, thinking about my child instead of this girl. Raise your voice against them. Let the evil forces fall. Make everyone aware by sharing.”

It has been shared with several remarks such as “India slowly becoming Pakistan for Hindus,” or “India slowly becoming Pakistan for Hindus.” Similar views while sharing the vidoe footage can be seen here and here and here. FACT-CHECK

Digiteye India took out key frames of the footage and searched for the original on Google Reverse Image Search. The results showed that the video was from an incident that happened on March 17, 2024, in Dinajpur district of Bangladesh, not from India.

Our search for more such tweets on the incident showed that it was aired by a Bangladeshi news channel Jamuna TV on March 18, 2024 on Youtube here. The closing shot of the video clearly shows the Bangla script. It was also reported here and here in local news outlets.

The news revealed that the school student was going to her sister’s house when the accused, Sakhawat Hossain, 20, son of Ariful Islam Mintu of the Baluadanga locality in Sakhawat, Bangladesh molested her. Later, his family told the local media that the accused was suffering from mental issues and undergoing treatment.

Hence, the footage is not from India but from Bangladesh.
