FACT CHECK

DigitEYE India decided to investigate this claim and found that it is misleading. Japan’s Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya words have been sensationalized in the claim, who said that Japan would “take a new approach” rather than explicitly “act against.”

We conducted a keyword search with the phrase “Japan’s Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya two state solution” to learn about the issue. A report published by The Japan Times on 20 September, 2025 has reported his exact wording.

It also reports the official statement from the Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya who said “If Israel takes further action to block the path to the realization of the two-state solution, we would have to take a new approach,” during a press conference on September 19, 2025. During the press conference, Japanese FM Iwaya declared that as of now, Japan will not recognise a Palestinian state at the upcoming UN Assembly. View the footage of this, published by APT news on 20th September, 2025.

Japan reiterated support for a two-state solution at UN meetings but declined to recognize Palestinian statehood this month, citing the need for negotiations. A report by Reuters published on 17 September 2025 confirmed this, drawing information from the Asahi newspaper. View a snippet from the report below –

While Japan’s Foreign Minister Iwaya did warn of a “new approach” if Israel further obstructs the two-state solution, the phrase “act against” sensationalizes it. The Asahi Shimbun newspaper reported Iwaya’s statements about considering a situation that would “would realistically lead to a two-state solution,” View a snippet from the report below –

Thus, the claim about Japan going to “act against” Israel is more of direct confrontation than stated, which is not what Japanese FM  Takeshi Iwaya said. Japan has affirmed that it must take a cautious  approach on recognition at this stage and has declined to recognize Palestinian statehood this month.

Thus, the claim is misleading.
