FACT CHECK

DigitEYE India decided to investigate the claim and found that it is misrepresentation of facts. The post distorts a legitimate bug-repellent use during an insect-disrupted match into a fabricated insult. The Pakistani women’s team did not spray air freshener to insult the Indian team.

We first conducted a web search with the phrase “India vs Pakistan women’s cricket air freshener” to learn about the claim. Several reports including one by NDTV sports confirmed how “The incident occurred when a swarm of flies disrupted play, causing huge discomfort to players from both sides…” View a section of the report below –

From a report by ESPN, we learned that the footage is from the India vs. Pakistan Women’s ODI World Cup 2025 match on October 5, 2025, in Colombo, Sri Lanka. It captures the 28th over when an insect swarm disrupted play, prompting Pakistani captain Fatima Sana and player Anam Amin to spray insect repellent on their clothing and the air to repel bugs, not air freshener. A report published by the Hindustan Times writes how “Nashra Sandhu was seen swinging her towel to keep the flies away. A few Pakistani players then approached the on-field umpire to have a chat…” The report shares an extended clip of this incident from X that can be viewed here.

Several news outlets confirm that the disruption was due to bugs and pest control spray was used. And we can see that  ground staff too fumigating the pitch with pest control spray.

Thus, the claim is misrepresentation.
