Did Indian Army explode multiple landmines in Balakot sector, along LoC? Fact Check

Claim: Indian Army exploded multiple landmines in Balakot sector, causing massive forest fire spread across the LOC.

Conclusion: The claim is misleading. A forest fire ignited multiple landmines along the LoC (Line of Control) on 7 December, 2025, and not the Indian Army blow up the landmines. However, no casualties reported.

FACT CHECK

DigitEYE India decided to investigate this claim and found that it is misleading. The landmines that erupted on Sunday, 7th December 2025 in the Balakote sector of Mendhar near the Line of Control was due to a forest fire. The Indian Army did not explode the landmines along the LoC.

Details

We first conducted a keyword search with the phrase “forest fire landmines LoC Balakot” to learn about the claim. According to a report published by The Tribute on 7 December, 2025, “At least half-a-dozen landmines exploded due to a forest fire along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district on Sunday, officials said.” It was contained by evening with no damage or injuries from blasts. Another report published by The Hans India has also confirmed this, stating that officials affirmed it was indeed a forest fire in Poonch. The report further mentions how “Forest fire broke out in the Balakote forest along the zero line at around 10 am, detonating over six landmines” as per an official’s statement. Furthermore, India’s PIB Fact Check unit labeled the narrative as misleading, attributing it to Pakistani accounts,  circulating videos to undermine Indian forces. The fire was natural, not army-initiated, part of a disinformation campaign. View the post made by PIB on X below –

Thus, the claim is misleading.
