FACT CHECK
DigitEYE India decided to investigate this claim and found that it is totally false. There is no reliable evidence or eyewitness account supporting the claim that a rare black lion was sold at a Dubai auction. The circulating video is AI-generated, and no such event has actually taken place.
We first conducted a web search with the phrase “$19 Million Rare Exotic Black Lion Dubai Auction” to learn more. However, the search results did not return any verified results. There are no credible reports from any media outlets or witnesses that can account for the auction.
Following this, we searched whether black lions exist at all or not in the real world. According to an article by Johan Siggesson, black lions do not exist because “lions do not carry the genetic mutation known as melanism,” which is the key condition required to produce a fully black coat. The article emphasizes that “the gene responsible for melanism has not been found in lions, and no black lion has ever been documented,” either in the wild or captivity. Another medium article by Dr. Karl Shuker also debunks the concept of black lions by showcasing many fake, manipulated images referring the original images. The article mentions that black lions are not real because “according to mainstream zoology, black lions simply do not exist,” and there are “no confirmed sightings” to support their existence. Many supposed examples are proven false, as “they are nothing more than Photoshopped images,” often traced back to normal lion or white lion photos digitally altered.
Next, we searched whether lion auctions are legal or not in Dubai to check the authenticity of the event. According to Gulf News, Federal Law No. 22 of 2016 explicitly bans private ownership “including big wild cats such as lions, cheetahs, panthers, tigers and leopards, as well as hyenas, crocodiles, wild dogs, predatory reptiles, eagles and vultures…” The report states that only domestic animals such as “cats, dogs, rats, cows, sheep, camels, llamas, alpacas and other non-dangerous animals” are not included in the ban.
