Claim : Fried food like chicken nuggets or fish and chips will be banned from all schools in the United Kingdom.
Conclusion : The claim is misleading. While the substance/content of the proposals is real, the post inaccurately presents them as applying across the entire United Kingdom. In reality, the changes are limited to schools in England only and not Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Several social media users have claimed that the U.K. banned junk food in schools. Verified X user ‘Coinvo’ shared such a post with the caption : JUST IN: Fried food like chicken nuggets or fish and chips will be banned from U.K. schools to reduce obesity. Pizza and sausage rolls will also be ‘severely limited.’ The post included a generic stock photo of nuggets and a UK flag image. View the post below –

FACT CHECK
DigitEYE India decided to investigate this claim and found it to be misleading. Although the proposals are genuine, the post wrongly suggests they apply to the entire United Kingdom. In fact, the changes are restricted to schools in England only and do not extend to Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland.
We first conducted a web search with the phrase “UK bans junk food in schools” to learn more.
The announcement made on 13 April, 2026 comes from the Department for Education (DfE), whose area of control spans over England. In their “What we do” section, it is clearly stated that “The Department for Education is responsible…apprenticeships and wider skills in England.” Thus, the official DfE blog refers to schools in England and makes no mention of Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland. Following this, we checked other reports and landed on a BCC report that explicitly states “schools in England.” The report discusses how “Deep-fried food will be banned and high-sugar items restricted in schools in England under new plans to “overhaul” school dinners.” The report mentions ‘fruit will replace “sugar-laden treats”’ and ‘schools will no longer be allowed to offer unhealthy “grab and go” options like sausage rolls and pizza every day.’ View this section from the report below –

A TOI report published on 13 April, 2026 also notes that “England schools to ban deep-fried food”, instead of mentioning the whole of the United Kingdom. The report states that this policy will “also restrict popular items like pizza, sausage rolls and high-sugar desserts under tighter food standards.” The reasons stated are the rising health concerns and obesity which are leaving children overweight.
Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland operate their own separate school food standards and have not issued equivalent announcements or consultations on a deep-fried food ban. No statements from the Scottish Government, Welsh Government or Northern Ireland Executive reference these changes. The ban on junk food in schools has therefore only been proposed in England, not the whole of the United Kingdom.
Thus, the claim is misleading.
