FACT CHECK
DigitEYE decided to investigate this claim and found it to be false. No verified evidence, official statement, or credible reporting supports this claim. China has not introduced any entry bans or travel measures targeting the US or any other nation over hantavirus concerns.
Details:
For context, we reviewed the WHO report published on May 8, 2026 on the recent hantavirus outbreak linked to a cruise ship, where the first patient likely contracted the infection through “environmental exposure” during activities in Argentina before boarding the vessel. WHO noted that the virus involved was the Andes virus and assessed the public health risk as “moderate” for the ship but “low” at the global level. View a section from the report below –

We first conducted a web search with the phrase “China bans US citizens due to hantavirus outbreak” to learn more. No official announcement, press release, or statement has been issued by the Chinese government or the Chinese Foreign Ministry. No Chinese news outlets or state media confirm such a ban.
Following this, we came across a report by Global Times that mentioned the comments by the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), published on May 8, 2026. China’s CDC said the Andes hantavirus strain linked to the recent cruise ship outbreak has “no known natural host distribution in China,” and that “no human infection cases have been reported in the country.” The CDC also stated that hantavirus infections “generally do not result in human-to-human transmission,” while the WHO currently assesses the global risk from the outbreak as “low.” View a section from the report below –

Another Xinhua report also confirmed that the Andes virus linked to the cruise ship outbreak has “no known natural host in China” and that “no human infections involving the strain have been reported domestically.” In terms of reducing hantavirus outbreaking, the strategy lies in “reducing contact with rodents” as the primary option. The report does not mention any travel ban or entry restrictions imposed by China on the US or any other country.
Lastly, we checked the current U.S. State Department Travel Advisory for China which contains no information regarding hantavirus-related ban. The Chinese embassy in the US has not published anything about hantavirus-related ban or restrictions in their visa procedure or application. China has not imposed any ban on US citizens and the people are allowed in the country.
Thus, the claim is false.
