Video claims RSS banned by Canadian government; Fact Check

Amid the diplomatic tension between Canada and India after the row over the killing Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Pro-Khalistani leader in Canada, a video has gone viral on social media claiming that the Canadian government has banned the Rashtriya Swayam Sevak Sangh (RSS), a right-wing organisation in India.

The video further asks the Canadian government to recall its envoy to India and send India’s envoy in Canada back, besides urging to impose a ban on trade with India. The post is being shared on X (formerly Twitter) here and here.

FACT CHECK

When we checked for the authentic video source using a cut-frame in reverse image search, we found a video on YouTube channel named NCCMtv, which posted the original and a longer version of it on September 20. The caption read: “NCCM CEO Stephen Brown Calls for Action in Response to Alleged Assassination of Sikh Man in Canada”.

The man speaking in the video has been identified as the CEO of the National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM), an organisation whose Twitter account has been banned in India for their hatred propaganda. It has no official standing and never represents the Canadian Government’s official announcements.

Secondly, the lip syncing is missing with what the speaker says in the video, which indicates that it was a morphed image. Further, the description of the video clearly says, “Today, NCCM CEO Stephen Brown joined Mukhbir Singh, Board of Directors, World Sikh Organization of Canada to call for clear actions by our government in response to the alleged assassination of Hardeep Singh Nijjar by agents of the Government of India.” Hence, it was a demand and not a dictum.

A general search on Google revealed no such statement by the Canadian government to the effect that the RSS was banned in Canada. So, the claim that the Canadian government has banned the RSS is false.

Claim: Canadian Government has banned RSS.

Conclusion: False, no such statement was made by the Canadian government.

Rating: Totally False — Five rating
