Are ‘Avengers : Doomsday’ and ‘Michael’ ineligible for Oscars due to AI rule update? Fact Check

Claim: Avengers : Doomsday and Michael are no longer eligible for Oscars following the Academy’s ban on generative AI.
Conclusion: The claim is false. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) has updated the Oscar eligibility rules for the 99th Academy Awards but it did not impose a blanket ban on films using generative AI. Moreover, there is no credible evidence that Avengers : Doomsday and Michael are not eligible for Oscars.

FACT CHECK
DigitEYE India decided to investigate this claim and found it to be false. While the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revised eligibility rules for the 99th Oscars, it did not introduce a complete ban on the use of generative AI in films. There is also no verified evidence suggesting that Avengers: Doomsday or Michael have been dismissed or banned for Oscars.
Firstly, we checked the official website of The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to confirm the update. Under the ‘Rules and Eligibility’ section, the Academy has indeed updated a new set of rules for the upcoming 99th Oscars. On slide 5 and 17, the rule says “Academy reserves the right to request more information about the nature of the use of generative AI and human authorship”.
A press release states that the 99th Oscars ceremony will take place on 14 March, 2027 at 7 p.m. EST / 4 p.m.
We read the Deadline report, published on May 1, 2026 which was linked as the source in the claim to learn more about the issue. The Academy has clarified that AI is not outright banned but eligibility depends on work being “demonstrably performed by humans” and screenplays being “human-authored.” Moreover, this report does not mention anything about Avengers : Doomsday or Michael being banned by the Academy. Upon searching further, we landed on a BBC report that explicitly stated that “the academy did not issue a ban on AI use in films more broadly.” The report states ‘if a filmmaker used AI tools in their work, such “tools neither help nor harm the chances” of achieving a nomination. Additionally, the report further adds that technology “has been part of filmmaking for many years, with the use of computer-generated imagery (CGI) being used widely since the 1990s.” View a section of the report below –

Lastly, we searched whether Avengers : Doomsday or Michael has been disqualified or banned by the Academy. We found no evidence of AI-generated actors or non-human-authored scripts for both the movies. With reference to MICHAEL, a Latination report observed how they “leveraged Jaafar Jackson’s genetic similarity to capture nuances that no Artificial Intelligence could ever replicate.” Moreover, “they used traditional mixing tools to merge Jaafar Jackson’s voice with archival material.”

Thus, the claim is false.
