Old video showing people running away with yoga mats resurfaces; Fact Check

A video clip from the Hindi news channel Aaj Tak is being shared on social media showing people running away with yoga mats soon after the International Yoga Day celebrations, usually done on June 21 each year, coinciding with the International Yoga Day.

The post was shared on Yoga Day on June 21, 2021, as seen:

“*योगा करने के बाद* से *भाजपाइयों ने लूट ली सारी चटाईयां, मैट व गद्दे।* भारत का यही चरित्र पूरे विश्व में हंसी का पात्र बनाता है। चटाई भी made in china चटाई लूटने वालों का कहना था वे यह सबक अपने राजा से सीखे हैं। *नँगे नहाएंगे क्या और निचोड़ेंगे क्या?”  (After doing Yoga, BJP people looted all the mats provided by organisers. It shows the character of India that makes the whole world laugh. Moreover, the mats are made in China. The looters said they have learnt it from their king.)

 

FACT CHECK

Digiteye India took it up for fact checking and a search on Youtube showed that the video was an old one dated 2019, where participants were clearly seen without wearing any mask. If it had happened in 2021, we could have seen many of the participants wearing a mask due to the Covid pandemic.

A Reverse Image Search based on a clip showed that the original ‘Aaj Tak’ clip that was aired on its YouTube channel on June 21, 2019. When played that clip, the footage related to the incident  begins at 4:20 min. Here is the original video.

The news report stated that people took away the yoga mats from the venue where Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Haryana Chief Minister ML Khattar had participated in the programme for International Day of Yoga in 2019. It was reported by news agency ANI whose clip was shared on many platforms and newsoutlets in 2019:

But the contrast is clearly visible as many participants in 2021 Yoga Day were seen wearing a mask.

Claim: After doing Yoga, BJP people looted all the mats.

Conclusion: The video was old one from 2019 but shared on the Yoga Day on June 21, 2021.
