FACT CHECK
DigitEYE India decided to investigate this claim and found it to be false. The video in the footage is edited and does not document the creation of the PS2 opening sound. The actual PlayStation 2 startup sound was developed by Sony sound designer Takafumi Fujisawa along with a dedicated team.
For context, if you’re unfamiliar with the PlayStation 2 startup sound or have forgotten the original, this video captures the audio that plays just before the system boots.
We first conducted a reverse image search on various keyframes of the video to learn more. The search took us to the original version of the footage that is about 3 minutes in length.
Even though the clip was uploaded on 23 April, 2011, the description states this is the “MIT Baker Piano Drop 2007” and the videographer is Clinton Blackburn. The piano is thrown at the timestamp 2:52 in the video and it makes a normal sound of wood breaking. Compared to the claim, there is no PS2 opening sound, proving that the claim uses an edited clip.
Next, we conducted a web search with the phrase “PS2 opening sound composer” to learn about the actual person who made it. According to a report published on the PlayStation Blog, Takafumi Fujisawa was the original creator of the iconic PlayStation startup sound, working on the project “even before the team was official” as part of the early hardware development. In 1994, as the prototype came together, he “created the startup sound” by combining the motion logo with his own sound design.
For the PlayStation 2, Fujisawa shifted into a broader creative role, saying that the sound team had “grown to a significant size,” leading him to create a concept and hold a team contest. He “finalized the final two options” and ensured that signature elements like perfect 4th chords remained central to the identity. Guided by a vision “like a monolith floating in space,” the PS2 sound was designed to express “simple strength” with a more minimal and futuristic feel.

Thus, the claim is false.
