Did CJI leave courtroom when Solicitor General was presenting arguments? Fact Check

Amid the historic judgement on electoral bonds for political parties, a video of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud walking out while Solicitor General Tushar Mehta was putting forward his arguments, has gone viral on social media with different claims.

One such post by a user Jayesh Mehta has triggered debate on Twitter.

The caption says: “How can the #CJI behave in this manner? SG is presenting his arguments before him and without adjourning, he and other judges simply walked away.. This is gross humiliation and insult to the Govt of India.. All the judges including the CJI Chandrachud should be hauled up and, forced to resign by the President of India. Totally mannerless and ARTOGANT this man Chandrachud is.. He and other judges are taking vengeance against the Govt of India.. I will be shortly post a thread listing reasons, behind this attitude of judges”.

FACT-CHECK

When searched for the entire video, nowhere did the Chief Justice of India leave the court room while the Solicitor General was presenting his arguments. When we searched on Youtube for the original video, we found the following one uploaded on March 18, 2024.

The alleged incident takes place at 24-minute mark and one can clearly see the Chief Justice speaking to his colleagues and adjusting his seat but did not leave the seat and go away. In fact, the proceedings continued without any interruption.

By making the video end abruptly at 24-minute mark, the false claim was made to show that the Chief Justice had walked out of the court room. Hence, the video and the claim are totally false.

Claim: When Solicitor general was presenting arguments in Supreme Court, the Chief Justice just walked away.

Conclusion: Totally False. The video was cut abruptly to make the claim. Original video shows that the CJI was there throughout the session.
